Renting a car in Turkey is the key to unlocking the country's most spectacular sights, from ancient ruins to stunning coastlines. For a tourist, the process can seem complicated, but it's quite straightforward with a little preparation. This guide covers everything you need to know for a seamless rental experience with us.
1. Required Documents
Having your paperwork in order is the most important step. You will need to present the following:
- Your Passport: You must have your original passport with you as a valid form of identification.
- Valid Driver's License: Your driver's license from your home country is required. It must use the Latin alphabet. If it doesn't (e.g., it's in Cyrillic, Arabic, or another script), you must also have an International Driving Permit (IDP).
- International Driving Permit (IDP): Even if your license uses the Latin alphabet, having an IDP is highly recommended. It serves as an official translation and can prevent issues during traffic stops. You must obtain this in your home country before you travel.
- Credit Card: You must have a physical credit card in the main driver's name. This is used to hold a security deposit (provision) against potential damages or fines. Debit cards are generally not accepted for the deposit.
2. Age and Experience Requirements
Rental companies have strict rules regarding driver age and experience.
- Minimum Age: Typically, the minimum age to rent an economy or compact car is 21. For larger sedans or SUVs, the minimum age may be 25 or even 27.
- Young Driver Surcharge: Drivers between the ages of 21 and 24 may be required to pay a "young driver fee."
- Driving Experience: You must usually have held your driver's license for at least 1 or 2 years, depending on the car category.
3. Understanding Insurance
Rental car insurance in Turkey can be confusing. Here are the basics:
- Third-Party Liability (Trafik Sigortası): This is mandatory by law and is always included in the rental price. It covers damages to other people or their property.
- Collision Damage Waiver (CDW - Kasko): This is the most common type of insurance. It covers damage to your rental vehicle but comes with an excess (deductible). This means you are responsible for paying for damages up to a certain amount; the insurance covers the rest.
- Super CDW / Full Insurance: This is an optional, extra insurance you can buy to reduce your excess to zero, giving you complete peace of mind. We highly recommend it.
The security deposit held on your credit card is directly related to the insurance excess. A higher excess means a larger deposit.
4. Fuel and Tolls
Fuel Policy
Most companies, including ours, operate on a "full-to-full" policy. You receive the car with a full tank of fuel and are expected to return it with a full tank. Be aware of the fuel type your car needs: "Benzin" (Gasoline) or "Dizel/Mazot" (Diesel). Putting the wrong fuel in can cause serious engine damage.
Tolls (HGS System)
Most major highways (Otoyol) in Turkey use an automated toll system called HGS. Our rental cars are equipped with an HGS sticker. You simply drive through the toll booth without stopping, and we will charge you for the tolls used at the end of your rental period. It's convenient and easy.
Final Tip: Inspect Your Car
Before you drive away, walk around the car with our agent and note any existing scratches, dents, or damages on the rental agreement. Take photos with your phone as an extra precaution. This simple step prevents any potential disputes when you return the vehicle.
By keeping these points in mind, you're ready for a fantastic and worry-free road trip. The freedom of the open road awaits!
