A Renter's Guide to Turkish Road Signs and Rules

Drive with confidence by understanding the essentials of driving in Turkey.

Driving in a foreign country can be an intimidating experience, but it's also the best way to truly explore. The roads in Turkey are generally well-maintained, but the rules and signs can differ from what you're used to. This guide will cover the most important rules and signs to help you navigate safely from the moment you pick up your rental car.

Key Rules of the Road in Turkey

Speed Limits

Always watch for posted signs, but the general speed limits are:

  • 50 km/h within cities and towns.
  • 90 km/h on two-lane roads outside of cities.
  • 120 to 140 km/h on motorways (called Otoyol, marked with green signs). Speed limits on motorways can vary, so always check the signs.
Radar speed checks (Radar) are common, and fines can be significant. It's always best to drive at or below the posted limit.

Important Regulations

  • Seat Belts: Mandatory for all passengers, in both front and back seats.
  • Blood Alcohol Limit: The limit is 0.05% for drivers of private cars. For commercial vehicles, including some rental types, it is 0.00%. Our advice: do not drink and drive at all.
  • Mobile Phones: Using a mobile phone while driving is strictly prohibited unless you are using a completely hands-free system.
  • Roundabouts (Göbek): Traffic already inside the roundabout has the right of way. Always yield to cars coming from your left before entering.

Understanding Common Turkish Road Signs

Many signs use internationally recognized symbols, but some key ones feature Turkish words you must know. The shapes and colors are your first clue:

The Most Critical Signs

These are the signs you absolutely must recognize for your safety.

  • DUR (STOP): A red, octagonal sign. It means the same as "STOP" anywhere in the world. You must come to a complete stop before proceeding.
  • YOL VER (YIELD/GIVE WAY): An inverted red and white triangle. You must give way to traffic on the road you are joining.
  • GİRİLMEZ (NO ENTRY): A solid red circle with a white horizontal bar. Do not enter this street.

Regulatory Signs (Usually Circular)

  • A number inside a red circle is the maximum speed limit.
  • A symbol of a car and a motorcycle with a red slash through it means No Motor Vehicles.
  • A 'P' with a red slash through it means No Parking (Park Etmek Yasaktır).

Warning Signs (Usually Triangular with a Red Border)

  • An exclamation mark warns of a general danger ahead.
  • Winding road symbols, pedestrian crossing symbols, and slippery road symbols are all common and use international pictograms.
  • DİKKAT means "CAUTION". You will often see this word accompanying a warning symbol.
